Godless and proud

October 29th, 2008 · No Comments

OK. Politicians will reach for anything to demonize their opponents, but Our Gal in D.C., Liddy Dole, has decided to run a commercial portraying her opponent, Kay Hagan, as unfit for office because she—gasp! consorts with atheists.

Her claim to that is that Hagan went to a fundraiser at the house of somebody whose husband is on the board of directors of an atheist group known as the Godless Americans political action committee.

Excuse me, but who gives a fuck?

There are politicians, here in Durham, who have BEEN TO MY HOME. And I’m an atheist. I’d name names, but you know, they might be voted out of office for having quaffed a few brews in my backyard.

But worse than Liddy’s commercial—after all, she’s a Republican in the South, so you can expect her to be anti-anything-but-Christian—is Hagan’s reaction. She’s threatening legal action, holding a press conference to assert her Christian cred, including being an elder and Sunday School teacher at a Presbyterian church.

I have a better idea. How about saying “There are Americans who believe in God, and Americans who don’t. ‘Godless’ does not mean ‘evil’”. I can meet with a Jewish group and it doesn’t mean that I’m Jewish. I can meet with an black group and it doesn’t mean that I’m black. I can meet with a group of model train enthusiasts and it doesn’t mean I’m a model train enthusiast. I am a Christian, and also an American who believes that America is big enough to include people of all religions, or no religion.”

I already voted for Hagan in early voting, but if she’d say something like that, I’d invite her over to my godless home for a beer.

P.S.: If you’d like to throw your godless money to godless causes, go here.

UPDATE: Whaddya know, the Hagan campaign called here that very night looking for a donation. After Mr. D. was done telling her what he thought, he handed me the phone and I let the campaign worker know how I felt about Hagan’s rush to dissociate herself from people like me.
