A hot time was had in the Bull City last night—in every sense of the word. The temperature was still in the high 90’s as the Scene of the Crime Rovers kicked off the festivities at the Fourth Annual Beaver Queen Pageant. A hilarious monologue and song from Fishscenta sealed the deal—although it was a bit difficult for her to wear the crown on top of her stunning samba headdress, a masterwork of sculpture reminiscent of Judy Chicago’s Dinner Party, if you know what I mean and I think you do.

Of course I’m disappointed that Badonna didn’t take the crown, since it was my job to handle that beaver. She had amazing costumes (different tails for each event!), professional face painting and a fun rendition of “Like a Beaver” (touched for the very first time!).

I don’t know the final tally on how much money was raised for Ellerbe Creek Watershed Association, but I know that we’d already exceeded last year’s sum before the pageant began.

I’m pretty tired out by all the excitement. I think I’ll go enjoy my new beaver coloring book.
