Looks like I’m not the only one who picked up on the telltale signs of migraine in the Harry Potter books. I hadn’t thought about the scar in that respect, but when he is gets a pounding headache from the fluorescent lights in his aunt’s kitchen, I had my Aha! moment.

There goes the Durham vote
March 22nd, 2008 · No Comments
Bill Clinton came the the Triangle to stump for his wife.
He went to Cary.
Now I’m not a placist myself, but to many of my friends, choosing Cary over Durham is the moral equivalent of parking your Hummer with the “I (heart) Republicans” bumper sticker in front of your McMansion that has five bathrooms with [...]

My plans for today:
1. An appointment at DMV
2. Get a chunk of skin cancer removed from my face
3. Do my taxes.
As Barry said, “Gee, can’t you fit a root canal in there somewhere?”

The Worst Bad News Ever
March 14th, 2008 · No Comments
Last week I wrote about how a cancer diagnosis of benign carcinoma is the best bad news ever.
Finding out that a dear friend died is the worst.
I didn’t know Martha well, but she was the beloved wife of a beloved friend of my own beloved husband, and that’s close enough for me to shed a [...]

Another accident waiting to happen
March 14th, 2008 · No Comments
Twice a day (at least) I negotiate the intersection in downtown Durham known as Five Points—the place where Main St. and Chapel Hill St. intersect, not in a “+” shape but in an “x” shape. At the wider angle of the “x”, Morris St. butts in.
It’s been much more convenient to drive around since Main [...]

The calm before the storm

I’ve spent quite a few hours in the last couple of weeks interviewing contractors. To date: 3 for kitchen renovations, 3 for floors, 2 for exterior painting, waiting on a call from a 3rd. That’s not counting the foundation issue…we called 2 contractors on that a while back (one of whom showed up), and a [...]

What a way to spend a weekend

I started out with the intention of setting up so I could work on a Wordpress blog locally, and ending up ratholing into attempting to set up a PHP/MySQL testing server on Dreamweaver for a site I maintain for a non-profit org. I’ve successfully installed MAMP, and finally figured out how to download and install [...]

Hey! I’m doing well. I only have 19 of the 35 symptoms of menopause.
And no, I’m not going to tell you which 19.
Hot flashes, flushes, night sweats and/or cold flashes, clammy
feeling
Irregular heart beat
Irritability
Mood swings, sudden tears
Trouble sleeping through the night (with or without night sweats)
Irregular periods; shorter, lighter periods; heavier periods,
flooding; phantom periods, shorter cycles, [...]
That other famous university in Chapel Hill

Just caught the end of the ABC news when I sat down to watch Jeopardy. They were doing a profile of a young man with a rare, incurable cancer who has dedicated the remaining years of his life to researching and raising awareness of the disease. I thought I recognized the Gothic-style buildings in the [...]

Living on Central Time
March 5th, 2008 · 6 Comments
Despite my best efforts—which are actually pretty pathetic since I have zero self-discipline first thing in the morning—I continue to breeze past my desired 6:30am wake-up time and sleep until 7:30am. And then I’m wide awake at 9:30pm and stay up reading Harry Potter or watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer reruns until 10:30pm.
I’ve decided that [...]
