Unlike many women, I’m not a big shopper. But the local, independently owned video store is closing one of its locations, and having a big big sale: $6 per movie, $15 for a season of a TV show. I got one gift which will remain nameless, but here’s what else I hauled out of there, all under $100:
Werner Herzog’s Nosferatu: The best vampire movie ever. Klaus Kinski at his creepiest (which is saying a lot) and the always-wonderful Bruno Ganz in a moody, over-the-top gothic moodfest. I know what I’m doing ever Halloween from now until whenever.
Season #1 of The Outer Limits: Each chranukahmas for the last coupla years I’ve been giving the spousal unit a new season of The Twilight Zone (Definitive Edition). I was also a big Outer Limits fan in my youth, so I was excited to see this for sale. Unfortunately, it’s the “new” Outer Limits—didn’t realize that until I got home. Hopefully, it won’t suck.
John Cleese on How to Irritate People: We already own the Monty Python box set, most of which we’ve seen ad nauseum on BBC America in recent years anyway. This is one neither of us have seen before.
The Big Picture: A personal favorite, a fun film about a recently-graduated film student who wins an award which promises that he can make a movie of his own. Hollywood nearly sucks Kevin Bacon’s soul out of his body in the process. Worth the price just for the “Abe and the Babe” and “invisible bikini girl” scenes. Kevin is zero degrees of separation from Jennifer Jason Leigh and a very funny Martin Short in this pic.
Another Woman, Scoop, Melinda and Melinda, Celebrity, Anything Else, Husbands and Wives: Except for the latter, I have never seen any of these Woody Allen films. It’s hard to keep up with a favorite director when he cranks out a film a year. Even his mediocre films are worth seeing. These should keep me busy for 3 months worth of the spousal unit’s poker nights.
Bull Durham, Special Edition: Can’t live here and not own this.
Oh, and did I mention that the spousal unit hit the sale last week? His takes:
Fargo: Adding to our growing Coen Brothers collection, which also includes Raising Arizona, The Big Lebowski and Oh Brother, Where Art Thou? Yah, you betcha!
Winged Migration: Birds. Flying. Fascinating. Really.
Serenity: Some sci-fi channel thing the hubby likes. It’s a western on another planet. Or something.
Forbidden Planet: Monsters! Monsters from the Id! With Capt. Drebbin and Honey West.
The Bicycle Thief: A never-seen movie on my must-see list.
Rockers: A reggae version of the above.
Neil Young, Heart of Gold: A recent documentary of an old favorite. I actually did some graphics for some older (1982?) Neil Young documentary on an ancient piece of computer graphics technology called the Dubner CBG-2. The general manager of the company was one of Neil’s neighbors out up in the redwoods south of SF. I’d like to say I smoked a joint with Neil Young, but I was the only one in the room actually working, so no. Todd Rundgren, on the other hand…
