Having just spent a wonderful two weeks in a beach house the next island north of Ocean Isle Beach, the story of the students from South Carolinaaffected me more than those sorts of news items usually do. From the reports of the neighbors and neighboring renters, it sounds like they were not only nice kids, but were also pretty responsible–having fun, but not being wild. It’s amazing how little it takes–a cigarette not quite put out, a floating ember from a grill, a candle too close to a towel–for a peaceful vacation to turn into a horror. I wish they could have all come home from their beach vacation with wonderful memories.
